# Task panel (create, edit, view)

> Create, edit, and view tasks in the task panel. The side panel adapts to a bottom drawer on small screens and changes its title based on the action.

Tasks open in a side panel (on smaller screens it may appear as a bottom drawer). The panel title changes depending on whether you are creating a task, editing a task, or viewing a task without edit permission.

## What this screen is for

* Create a new task quickly from the workspace task list (or other linked entry points).
* Update task details, assignment, and excursion links.
* Review task history, comments, and documents when viewing an existing task.

## What you can see (create / edit)

* **Title** text field.
* **Description** rich text editor (optional).
* **Status** selector with icon labels.
* **Priority** selector with icon labels.
* **Due date** date picker. Due dates are date-only (no time of day). You can clear a selected due date.
* **Assigned user** selector — a searchable combobox that lists workspace staff with their name, avatar, and email. Type to filter by name or email, and select **Unassigned** to leave the task without an owner.
* **Excursion role** selector, including a **No role** option.
* **Linked excursion** selector, including **No linked excursion**.
* If the task is linked to excursion risk controls, an **Originating controls** list may show links back to the relevant excursion risk area.
* For existing tasks, an **Activity** section summarises recent changes.
* For existing tasks, tabs for **Comments** and **Documents**.
* Footer actions **Cancel** and **Save changes** (or **Create task** when creating), when you have edit permission.

## What you can see (read-only)

If you open a task without permission to edit it, you may see a read-only notice explaining you can view but not change the task. Editing controls are disabled and the save footer actions are not shown.

## Common actions

### Save a task

Choose **Save changes** (or **Create task**) to store updates. A success message confirms the save.

If you assign or reassign the task to another specific staff user, that user receives a notification. Self-assignment and role-only assignment do not send a notification.

### Cancel changes

Choose **Cancel** to reset the form to the last loaded values and close the panel.

### Discuss a task

Use the **Comments** tab to post discussion on the task record. Mention an active workspace user with `@` when you want them to receive a notification that links back to the comment.

### Attach supporting files

Use the **Documents** tab to upload and manage files related to the task, when available.

### Jump to related risk controls

If originating controls are listed, follow the link to open the related excursion in the risk management area.

## Empty, loading, and error states

* Field-level messages appear when a value is not valid (for example an invalid due date).
* A general error alert may appear if the task cannot be saved.

## Permissions and read-only behaviour

Task editing is only available when your workspace role allows task management. If you are read-only, use the panel to review details without changing them.

## Tips

* Use the description for context that helps the assignee complete the work without extra messages.
* If a task is excursion-specific, link the excursion so it is easy to find later.
* Keep due dates realistic; date-only due dates are best used as day-level commitments.
